Jonas Built Environment Portfolio

Welcome to my build environment portfolio!

I am currently looking for a Werkstudent position next to my Master in Structural Engineering at Eindhoven University of Technology. I am particularly interested in Parametric Design and Timber Construction. I am passionate about driving sustainability and innovation in the built environment. I was a team lead in the student team that made second place at the Solar Decathlon Europe 21/22. In my projects, I focus on engineered timber and I use structural engineering and parametric design to create and script form-finding and KPI-optimized structures.

009 The Station

Year: 2023

Project type: Commission, Design phase

Role: Drafting support

Function: Central train station

Location: EU city

Material Focus: Glulam

In my first project after graduating I helped with the detailing and modeling of complex Glulam steel arch connections for a train station entrance hall in the design phase of the project.

008 The Tower

Year: 2023

Project type: Graduation Project

Role: Structural and parametric engineer

Function: Viewing tower

Material Focus: Glulam

In my graduation project, I designed a parametric viewing tower. The structure was designed with the help of Rhino 3D (Grasshopper), as well as Oasys GSA. Optimization algorithms were deployed for form-finding as well as dimensioning of the structure. The structural calculations and resulting unity checks were directly integrated into the Grasshopper script. The script allows for a broad range of shapes that can be evaluated against KPIs that are calculated in the tool.

007 The Hills

Year: 2022

Project type: Interdisciplinary project (6 ppl)

Role: Structural engineer

Function: Housing

Location: Breda, Netherlands

Material Focus: CLT, Glulam

The goal of the project was to design a housing complex with a focus on affordable housing that will achieve energy neutrality in 2030. It was designed by an interdisciplinary team comprising of two architects, a structural designer (me), a building physicist, an urbanist, and a real estate manager.

006 The Triplet

Year: 2022

Project type: Team project (2 ppl)

Role: Architect

Function: Office

Location: Eindhoven, Netherlands

Material Focus: CLT, Glulam

The goal of the project was to design a small office. The focus was here to study and understand the architectural language of an established studio and translate it into our own design.

005 The Ripple

Year: 2020-2022

Project type: Competition (team of 60 ppl)

Role: Lead for the engineering & construction team and sustainability team

Function: Housing

Location: Wuppertal, Germany

Material Focus: CLT, reclaimed wood

As part of Team VIRTUe I took part in the Solar Decathlon competition in the 2021/22 edition in Wuppertal, Germany. Participating teams design and fully constructed cutting-edge solar-powered sustainable houses.
With our ripple concept, pushing the boundaries of what is possible in the built environment we placed 2nd.

My role was as lead for two teams: engineering & construction and sustainability, representing two disciplines in the competition. As such, I was responsible for the energy concept of the house and sustainability measures to reduce embodied and operational energy.

004 The Arch

Year: 2021

Project type: Solo project

Role: Architect

Function: Library

Location: Eindhoven, Netherlands

Material Focus: Laminated bamboo

The Arch is my proposal for a new library in the heart of Eindhoven as part of the current urban redevelopment. It also functions as a meeting point for the community and a visual icon for the city. A noticeable design element is an arch-shaped dome.

003 The Line

Year: 2021

Project type: Solo project

Role: Structural engineer and building performance

Function: Mixed-use affordable housing and office

Material Focus: Laminated bamboo

The shape and dimensions of this building were part of the project brief. The focus was here on designing a complete structure including services, wall and floor build-up, as well as detailing and calculating structural elements. I included a 4-way split column design in the structure.

002 The Wave

Year: 2021

Project type: Solo competition

Role: Architect

Function: Café

Location: Bali, Indonesia

Material Focus: Laminated bamboo

This is the entry to the first competition I participated in. The goal was to design a café in Kuta Selatan in Bali. I designed the structure following the shape of a wave to connect to its context. I used laminated bamboo as the main element.

001 The Terraces

Year: 2020

Project type: Solo project

Role: Architect

Function: Community center

Location: Eindhoven, Netherlands

Material Focus: Laminated bamboo

This was the first project I did as part of my studies. The aim was to design a community center that included a café and a small gallery. The structure is made up of laminated bamboo elements. All components are designed around a multiple of the number 36. A unique design element is the 4-way split column design.
